Work can be a passion, a joy, more lasting than any love affair--if it's your real work. Of course, your real work may or may not bring in a lot of money. It's a balancing act, and can be a difficult one to master.
And then, many of us keep our struggles with money a secret, sometimes even from ourselves. We'd rather not know exactly what the situation is, because then we can sort of ignore it and not have to take responsibility for improving it.
