This is a book about recognizing, valuing, and holding on to real love, manifested in as many ways as there are different personalities. If you have ever thought that it seems crazy to hate the one you loved enough to marry, and you still love, if only things could be different, this book might be a counteractive force against the destructive aspects of the divorce machine and cultural expectations.

Barbara Quick describes a number of divorced couples who have found creative ways not only to continue their own relationships, but to gradually incorporate their new partners and sometimes their original in-laws, as well as the new partners and even new families of their exes, into a large extended family. She doesn't deny that this can require a huge amount of intention, patience, and willingness to hang in there and work things through rather than try to escape from the situation. But it's clear that these unconventional extended families can become a rich source of support and love.

The book is a little confusing at first because the author has divided each story into categories order to illustrate how the couples handled different challenges, but as you read you become familiar with the different voices and situations. It's not a how-to book, but a series of real-life stories which provide some much-needed light on a difficult subject.
