Physical and Emotional Health and Healing During the Change, 2nd Edition Dr. Christiane Northrup 2006
Starting out as a conventional gynecologist, Christiane Northrup has gotten more and more "far out" as she has learned more and, I suppose, has been hanging out with her friend Dr. Mona Lisa Schultz! She has become a kind of media star, but she has kept her very personal approach to the way she offers advice. Her website has gotten more product-oriented but it still offers a wealth of free information.
Dr. Northrup has covered every aspect of the physical and emotional process that we enter at perimenopause from a perspective that is extremely well-balanced between the medical and the psychological. The "change of life" is exactly that time when our comfortably established habits and carefully negotiated compromises are likely to lose their power to satisfy us - or in some cases blow up in our faces - and we are forced to search for new understandings and solutions for the second half of life
The wisdom of menopause is "our inner guidance system trying to get us to pay attention to the adjustments we need to make in our lives, adjustments that become particularly urgent during perimenopause." Written from a personal point of view and full of examples from her own life and lives of friends and patients, this book is a compassionate and realistic guide to how to negotiate the path. I wish I had been able to read it 15 years ago.
You will find clear medical descriptions of all the symptoms and diseases associated with menopause and aging, and complete recommendations for prevention and treatment. She has moved over the years from a conventional medical point of view to a holistic view that includes emotional interpretations of disease which she integrates into the discussion in a very enlightening way. Her discussion of the thorny issues of hormone use and breast cancer are especially fine.
