This transition has a lot of cultural garbage attached - it might be a big deal or it might pass almost unnoticed. But there is no question that often emotional situations come to a head and can no longer be ignored, and that there usually are some physical effects that need to be addressed. Since we have largely lost the tribe, clan or extended family support that made the experience of older women readily available to younger women, many of us face the changes we experience without knowing what to expect or what to do. One?s doctor historically has been almost as badly informed. Now information is available for all again through some excellent books.

Physical and Emotional Health and Healing During the Change, 2nd Edition Dr. Christiane Northrup 2006
Starting out as a conventional gynecologist, Christiane Northrup has gotten more and more "far out" as she has learned more and, I suppose, has been hanging out with her friend Dr. Mona Lisa Schultz! She has become a kind of media star, but she has kept her very personal approach to the way she offers advice. Her website has gotten more product-oriented but it still offers a wealth of free information.

The Wise Woman Way Susun S. Weed 2002 Excerpt from book Buy new or used at Amazon
This is another beautiful book from Susun Weed. She is the advocate par excellence of the most natural approach to maintaining heath using foods and herbs. Invoking the wisdom of traditional women, she recommends herbal and homeopathic remedies to counter each physical symptom of menopause. Unlike the Ayurvedic and Chinese Medicine traditions, where a knowledgeable practitioner compounds herbal mixtures, she recommends "simples," one herb at a time, preferably from the plant, made into infusions and tinctures. This means the process is easy and within the reach of anyone who is willing to spend the time on learning and practicing. Herbal tinctures are also available commercially. Weed pays equal attention to the emotional issues associated with symptoms and suggests appropriate actions.

The Breakthrough Book on Natural Progesterone
John R. Lee, M.D. and Virginia Hopkins
1996 (only available used)
Excellent free newsletter you can subscribe to on the site.
New: Dr. John Lee's Hormone Balance Made Simple Clear, step-by-step guidance for a natural hormone program that's tailored to your individual needs.
One of the first doctors to deeply explore women's hormone issues, he believed that most problems with estrogen are caused by estrogen dominance in the body. Progesterone is the natural hormone that opposes estrogen and supports breast and bone health, not to be confused with synthetic progestins such as are contained in Premarin and can cause problems. Many alternative practitioners support this idea; conventional doctors are often unfamiliar with it.
